자연장 장묘제도 시행

전무출신, 시대 변화에 앞장서 장묘문화 선도

지난 5월23일 법타원 김이현 원정사가 열반했다. 교단의 장의위원회에서는 원정사의 장지를 '영모묘원 전무출신 자연장'이라고 공지했다. 재가 출가교도들은 자연장에 대한 궁금증이 증폭됐다.

이와관련 원기88년 4월25일 전무출신 장묘제도에 대한 '설문'을 시작으로 의견수렴과 공청회를 거쳐 원기97년 8월22일 영모묘원 이사회에서 자연장 설치안을 합의해 시행되기 시작했다.

영모묘원에서는 자연장지 조성의 과정을 거쳐 법타원 김이현 원정사를 처음으로 자연장 장묘제도를 시행한 것이다.

영모묘원 김관현 원장은 "법타원님이 7년 전부터 늘 하시던 말씀이 '나는 대원전도 안간다. 답답하다. 매장은 너무 비싼데 차지하고 있을 수 없다. 육영사업으로 쓰면 좋겠다'고 한 후 '나는 자연장으로 해달라'고 의견을 밝혔다"고 설명했다. 이에 최도운 교무가 장묘제도의 장사법을 전공해 자연장을 추진하게 된 것이다.

김 원장은 지난해 법타원 종사에게 문병을 갔을 때의 상황을 전했다. 그는 "법타원님이 '내가 자연장을 안하니 빨리 못가는 것 같다. 빨리 하라'고 서둘러 주셨다"며 "3개월을 예상했는데 1년여가 걸렸다. 자연장지를 염두에 두고 영모묘원을 개발한 것이 아니라서 새롭게 조성하느라 시간이 걸렸다. 법타원님이 자연장지를 남향으로 잡아 주셨다. 참 좋다는 말을 많이 했다"고 밝혔다.

자연장의 개념과 방법

그렇다면 '자연장'은 어떻게 하는 것일까. '자연장'에 대해서는 장사 등에 관한 법률에 규정되어 있다. 즉 '화장한 유골의 골분을 수목·화초·잔디 등의 밑이나 주변에 묻어 장사하는 것'으로 정의하고 있으며 '자연장지'를 조성하여 장사할 수 있도록 하고 있다.

'자연장의 방법'은 지면으로부터 30cm이상 깊이에 화장한 유골의 골분을 묻되, 용기를 사용하지 않은 경우에는 흙과 섞어서 묻어야 한다. 또 화장한 유골의 골분, 흙, 용기 외에 유품 등을 함께 묻어서는 안 된다. 용기를 사용할 경우에는 '자원의 절약과 재활용 촉진에 관한 법률' 제2조 제11호에 따른 생분해성 수지 제품이나 전분 등 천연소재로써 생화학적으로 분해가 가능한 것을 사용해야 한다. 용기의 크기는 가로, 세로, 높이가 각각 30cm이하여야 한다.

영모묘원에서는 자연장을 행할 시 용기를 사용하지 않고 분골와 마사토를 1:3 비율로 섞어 50cm 깊이로 묻는 방법을 취하고 있다.

최도운 교무는 "자연장은 5년 정도 기간이 지나면 토화(土化)된다. 흙과 같은 형질로 된다. 길게는 15년까지도 본다"며 "토질에 따라 다르다. 단 황마사와 섞지 않으면 그 기한이 오래간다. 벌레도 생긴다. 우리는 황마사를 섞어 자연장을 시행하고 있다"고 소개했다.

전무출신 정원형자연장 도입

현시대 장묘문화는 매장에서 화장, 납골당으로 빠르게 변화해 왔다. 2000년대 들어서는 자연장이라는 새로운 장묘형태가 등장하고 있다. 보건복지부 조사에 따르면 우리나라 화장율은 2020년에는 80%까지 늘어날 것으로 전망되며 화장이후 납골문화 또한 자연장 쪽으로 옮겨간다고 예측하고 있다.

자연장이란 자연을 훼손하지 않고 고인을 아름답게 자연 속으로 모시는 자연 회귀적이며 친환경적인 바람직한 장묘형태로 보고 있다.

교단에서는 용타원 서대인 원정사와 법타원 김이현 원정사가 자연장(당시에는 유골을 뿌리는 형태)에 대한 의견을 피력한 바 있다. 즉 '법훈 묘역의 당신들 자리는 육영사업에 사용하고 자연장으로 하고 싶다'고 밝힌 적이 있다.

시대적 변화 속에서 전무출신이 앞장서서 장묘문화를 선도해 가야 한다는 의견이 오늘날 자연장을 도입한 배경이라 할 수 있다.

현재 영모묘원에서는 일반인자연장, 시신기증전무출신자연장, 전무출신자연장으로 구분되어 있다. 일반인자연장은 9묘역위쪽에 잔디형자연장 형식으로 모셔지고 있다. 시신기증전무출신자연장은 대원전과 7묘역사이에 헌혼탑 뒤편에 정원형자연장 형식으로 모시고 있다.

전무출신 자연장은 관리동과 대원전 사이에 정원형자연장형식으로 전무출신을 모시고 있으며 1호 법타원 김이현 원정사를 시작으로 김지현·임선양·김봉식 교무와 최근 열반한 김혜신 교무를 자연장으로 거행했다.
스토리텔링 한 자연장지

영모묘원의 자연장지는 의식광장과 의식제단이 설치돼 있다. 최 교무는 의식광장과 제단 사이 연못에 대해 "흘러가는 물은 시간의 연속성을 상징하고 지금까지 살아온 세월을 되돌아보고 성찰한다. 고인 물은 현재 마음상태를 비춰보는 것이다"며 "물은 청량감이 있어 시원함과 마음의 정화, 연못에 비친 하늘과 날아다니는 새, 물 위에 떠 있는 낙엽도 변화하는 정원의 개념에 속한다"고 설명했다.

연못 위 다리는 '연결'의 의미가 있다. 이승과 저승, 어제와 오늘, 산자와 죽은 자의 연결고리가 다리를 건넘으로 인해 이생에 미진했던 것을 놓고 간다는 의미를 부여했다. 제단에서 의식하고 참뱃길 통해 지정한 위치에 유골을 모시고 자연장을 하게 된다.

최 교무는 "훗날 사이버 추모관 검색대를 설치할 예정이다"며 "100인치 LED를 설치해 고인의 약력과 교화한 모습 등 간단하게나마 선진님들에 대해 알 수 있도록 하려 한다. 인터넷이 연결되는 모든 곳에서 검색이 가능하다"고 말했다. 이렇듯 스토리텔링을 해 자연장지 공간이 추모 이야기로 살아난다. 또한 추모공간 둘레길도 조성했다.

영모묘원 능선을 추모명상 치유길이라 이름 짓고 그 길에 생사법문을 2~3줄로 해 부착할 예정이다. 법문을 읽으며 삶과 죽음에 대한 명상을 돕는 것이다.

최 교무는 "모든 교도들이 생로병사를 체험할 수 있도록 하려한다"고 덧붙였다. 생로병사 체험관, 장의 박물관 까지 갖추는 것이 영모묘원의 장기 사업이다.
