원불교 장묘문화의 방향

조상의 추모공원, 정원 활용 필요

우리는 매년 추석과 설날에 국민 대이동이 일어난다. 고속도로가 주차장으로 변하여 힘든 귀향길이 되어도 부모님을 찾아뵙고자 하는 효사상은 변하지 않는다.

원기74년 9월14일에 대산종사께서는 추석을 맞아 영모묘원에 많은 성묘객이 찾아오는 것을 보고 "우리나라 국민처럼 조상을 숭배하는 국민도 흔하지 않을 것이다. 열반하신 선진들을 찾아 성묘하고 그분들을 추모하는 것은 후대 자손들에게도 크게 교훈이 될 것이며, 그 덕으로 인해서 우리 국민들은 후에 큰 복을 받게 될 것이다"라고 말씀했다.

장묘는 매장과 묘지를 아울러 이르는 말로써 열반 후 발인까지를 장례라고 한다면 발인이후 고인의 장사부분을 장묘라 할 수 있다.

과거의 우리나라 장묘문화를 살펴보면 국민의 대다수가 매장을 선호하고 일부는 화장을 하였다. 물론 오래된 장묘 풍습엔 풍장도 있었고 그 외에 여러 가지 형태가 있었다. 제한된 국토에 매장문화가 성행하여 묘지가 차지하는 비율이 늘어나게 되어 정부에서는 봉안당(=납골당) 설치를 홍보하고 지원정책들이 뒷받침 되었다. 그 후 공설 봉안당에 합동으로 모시거나 선영 각각의 묘지를 화장하여 가족 봉안묘를 조성하는 붐이 일어 몇 년 전 한동안 성공적으로 보이기도 하였다.

하지만 차츰 시일이 지나자 산의 이곳저곳에 석물로 축조되어진 작은 집모양의 가족봉안묘가 들어서서 산을 찾는 사람들은 자연에 대한 경이로움보다는 혐오감과 무서움을 느끼기도 하였다. 가족봉안묘의 재질은 화강암을 사용하기에 채석과 사후처리가 환경파괴의 문제점으로 드러나고, 유골함 안과 밖의 기온차로 결로현상이 생겨 물방울이 유골함 내부로 떨어져 골분이 부패하고 유골함 밖에도 거미, 개구리, 뱀까지도 들어가 살게 되는 문제점이 있다.

결로현상의 해결책으로 유골함과 뚜껑의 접합부분에 실리콘재질의 패킹을 이용한 '진공유골함'이 나왔지만 공조시스템이 설치된 대단위 봉안당을 제외한 일반 야외의 봉안묘에서는 결로현상을 막지 못한다. 그리고 지금은 봉안묘의 시설기준을 법률로써 제한하여 봉안묘의 허가를 얻는 문제도 예전처럼 쉽지 않게 되었다.

그 이후 대안으로 자연장의 한 형태인 수목장을 선호하게 되었는데 그것은 특정 나무를 선택하여 그 밑에 화장한 골분을 장사하고 그 나무에 고인의 이름표 정도를 붙인 것이다. 하지만 수목장은 산이 완만한 경사도를 가진 곳에 적합하지만 우리나라 대부분의 산은 경사가 급하여 일반화되기 어렵다. 또한 나무를 고인처럼 생각하여 그 나무가 병들거나 죽으면 자손의 길흉으로 연관 지을 수 있는 문제점이 있다.

또 다른 자연장(自然葬)의 형태로 화단장, 화초장, 잔디장 등이 새로운 문화로 나타나고 있지만 친환경적이며 설치가 쉽고 추모의 정성이 깃든 정원장(庭園葬=休園)을 조성하여 고인을 모시는 것이 좋다고 본다.

정원장은 잘 가꾸어진 정원에 화장한 골분(骨粉)을 마사토와 1:1비율로 혼합 30cm이상 깊이에 장사하고 봉분과 표석, 명패를 달지 않는다. 고인을 모신 정원 그 자체가 묘소이며 추모의 공간이 되는 것이다. 묘지나 수목이 아닌 가까운 곳 작은 정원을 만들어 고인을 모시는 것이다.

앞으로 각 교구 교당마다 천도재, 열반기념제를 통하여 의식교화와 가족교화도 자연스럽게 이루어지길 기대해 본다.

대종사는 "사은에 효를 열어야 세계평화가 된다"고 말씀하셨고, 대산종사는 "공도자숭배의 정신과 조상봉대의 정신을 강조하는 것은 잃어가는 효사상을 앙양하고 공도정신을 살리기 위한 것"이라고 말씀하셨다. 전세계 모든 인류가 근본을 찾고 조상과 공도자를 위한 효사상이 이곳저곳에서 피어날 수 있도록 정성을 다하여 공사에 최선을 다하고 싶다.
